Maelstrom is the third full-length album by Norwegian hardcore band JR Ewing, originally released in 2005 on Coalition Records with international release via Dim Mak Records. Emerging from the late-1990s Scandinavian hardcore scene, the album captures the band at a crucial turning point in their development.

Sonically harsher and more complex than their previous work, Maelstrom pushes beyond traditional hardcore into abrasive noise rock and early post-hardcore territory. The record is defined by dissonant guitar work, abrupt tempo shifts and an unrelenting sense of tension, paired with raw, uncompromising production.

Lyrically, Maelstrom reflects JR Ewing’s confrontational and politically aware stance, addressing themes of power, control, alienation, and individual responsibility. The album’s urgency and aggression position it as a foundational release that set the stage for the band’s further progression.

More than two decades on, Maelstrom remains a key document mid 2000s European hardcore—intense, uncompromising, and influential within the genre.
