The Camera Obscura

The Camera Obscura

San Diego was the place to be in the mid to late 90s. Labels like Three One G and Gravity Records were shining a light on the city’s diverse and active DIY music scene and punks coast to coast were taking note.

They formed in 1998 from the ashes of Shortwave Channel, The Interstate Ten, and Spanakorzo and quickly made themselves known. Someone once compared them to, “…a dance party during a tornado watch”. They were a full frontal attack of feverishly dark, synth-drenched post-hardcore and noise rock with elements of shoegaze beauty interspersed.

During the band's short tenure they played shows with Fugazi, Blonde Redhead, Tristeza, The Faint, Men's Recovery Project, The Vue, and many others. They released two 45s and a full length before disbanding in 2000.

We’re excited to announce a 25th Anniversary reissue of their LP, To Change the Shape of an Envelope on 2/7/25. It will be available digitally for the first time ever as well as on Limited Edition Ruby Red or Opaque White vinyl.
